FAQ
How much does it cost to start an LLC?
In our 2026 data, year-1 state costs run from $35 in Montana to $890 in California. Pick your state above for the exact lines.
Which states cost the most to keep an LLC each year?
Year-2 state costs are highest in California ($800), Massachusetts ($500) and Delaware ($400).
Do I have to pay for a registered agent?
No. You can be your own registered agent if you have a street address in the state and can accept legal papers there during business hours. A paid service is optional; the calculator uses an editable estimate you can change.
Which fee does the calculator use when a state lists more than one?
The first price listed in our fee table, usually online filing. The other options (paper, expedited, late) appear in small print under that line.
Why do some lines say “see state guide”?
Some costs depend on your county newspaper, revenue, or members, so our data names them without one amount. That applies in Alabama, Nebraska, New York and Tennessee. A DBA fee also varies by state and county.
